Agribusiness boss, Agunbiade calls on govt to subsidize farm inputs

With continuous soaring of food prices across the country and predicted hunger storm, the Managing Director, Tafrig Global Resources, Folake Agunbiade, Wednesday, said, it has become imperative for government to subsidize farm inputs.

Agunbiade lamented that it has become very difficult for farmers to purchase farm inputs which also is a major reason for high food prices across the country.

She said: “Price of inputs have gone really high compared to  the price we sell produce in the market.

“Government needs to provide support to farmers by subsidising the prices of farm inputs and regulate price of farm produce such that we farmers will not be recording losses as we do.

“Government needs to provide financial support, security, infrastructure and good roads that link farms to the city for farmers.

However, she further pointed that it has become a precarious situation as farmers have continued to suffer high post-harvest losses, because there has not been real support for farmers to tackle the challenge.

“The demand for farm produce is always high but we lack improved storage facilities to preserve produce which eventually leads shortage in supply.

“We farmers are struggling to survive especially we the irrigation farmers, most of us depend on petrol and diesel to run our and now with high cost of fuel and diesel we find it extremely difficult to operate and maintain competitive prices”, she stated.

Meanwhile, she (Agunbiade) appealed to Government and donor agencies to work with real farmers as they have experienced diversion of interventions meant for farmers really on the field working to feed over 200 million mouths.

“Govt and donor agencies should  identify the real farmers, the real farmers are on the field working and provide support for them not only financially but with favourable policies that will ensure they operate without fear of loss”, she added
